23. Time (7): Moment and Inner Awakening: Under Divine Light and Guidance of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji

Moments spent in ‘HIS’ remembrance are real blessings. Such moments boosts positive outlook and also changes inner world of an individual. How the inner world is changed, let us try to understand in light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

As per Dhan Shri Guru Raam Daas Ji:

(I cannot live for a moment, for even an instant, without my Beloved, like the opium addict who cannot live without opium.)

Above ‘Shabad’ has been picked up intentionally to progress the discussion. The reference to ‘Opium’ by Guruji should catch every one eyes. Opium is an addiction, it deludes the mind to believe the moments lived under its influence are great. But it eventually makes an individual sick both physically and mentally. So, Guruji clearly opposes the idea of consuming opium and asking everyone to drown every moment in the remembrance of ‘The Naam’.

Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev JiDhan Shri Guru Amar Daas Ji, Dhan Shri Guru Raam Daas Ji Dhan Shri Guru Arjan Dev J and Naam Dev Ji say following:

(I cannot live for a moment, for even an instant, without seeing Him, O my mother.)

(Without the Lord’s Name, I cannot live, even for a moment.)

Without ‘HIM’ an individual in ‘True Love’ with ‘HIM’ cannot live even for a moment. What kind of mental state is that, a state in which without ‘The Naam’ an individual does not want to live for a moment? An individual regrets if ‘The Naam’ is forgotten even for a moment. The survival seems difficult. Such moment seems worse than death that is death is acceptable but not forgetting ‘The Naam’. Guruji even mentioned ‘The Soul Death’. Soul never dies as it is part of ‘Supreme Consciousness’. Well ‘Soul Death’ signifies soul is deprived of the nutrition it requires and the nutrition is ‘Chanting of The Naam’ every moment. That’s what moment should be used for. So does it sound like ‘Addiction’? Well yes, but addiction is considered as ‘negativeword. But if Guruji uses it an as example, it has meant for benefiting masses. He stresses on ‘The Naam’ remembrance every moment which is only ‘positive’. ‘It’ has ‘Thirst’ which is quenched and again rises ensuring an individual rises to ‘Pinnacle’.

What else happens in such a state, what else is asked, what else is seeked by an individual let us continue. Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji is collection of such blessings, bow down in ‘Their Glory’.

Dhan Shri Guru Nanak Dev Ji says following:

(O Baba, calculate that auspicious moment, when I too shall be going to my in-laws’ house)

Dhan Shri Guru Arjan dev Ji:

(Slave Nanak sings Your Glorious Praises forever. Please, just for a moment, bless him with Your Glance of Grace.)

(O Nanak, never should I forget the Naam, even for a moment; bless me with Your Grace, Lord God!)

(My eyes are drenched with the Love of my Beloved; without Him, I do not have even a moment’s peace.)

(I would sacrifice all other riches, for a moment’s union with my Beloved.)

(Without meeting Him, I have no peace or tranquility; I cannot survive for a moment, even for an instant.)

(Show Mercy to me, that I may meet God, and gaze upon the Blessed Vision of His Darshan every moment.)

How many opportunities one gets to call every moment auspicious? Mortals get few chances to say same, else most of the moments mortals crib as cursed. Well, Guruji can call every moment auspicious since ‘They’ are in ‘HIS’ gratitude every moment. But ‘They’ want everyone to understand that’s why ‘They’ uttered ‘The Shabads’. ‘They’ are telling whole humanity to ask for ‘HIS Grace or Vision’ every moment. When an individual is away from his dear one, he thinks about him every moment and it seems to him as if mental peace is lost. No words can tranquilize his mind. Such is a state Guruji is explaining with ‘Their’ experiences. A moment away from ‘HIM’ ruins the peace of mind. What price an individual is willing to pay to see his dear one. Well, Guruji is willing to give up all the riches to meet ‘HIM’.

So, a moment can have real worth. Who could ever imagine that? A realized soul is willing to give all the riches for a moment, calls it auspicious. Many will consider it the power of moments. Well, if moments would have power it would have killed ‘You – The Ego’. And all the greats would have bowed down to ‘Kaal – The Time’. But ‘Baba Nanak’ has taught to bow down to ‘Akaal – One Beyond Time, One not influenced by Time’. Since only ‘Akaal’ can negate the ego. It does not mean ‘moments’ are not important. Well they are and even if an individual comes under ‘HIS’ grace at last moment of his life, he is salvaged. So, it is important to understand what is ‘Last Moment’ and what does it hold for an individual. We will focus on it next in the light of Dhan Shri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.
