In part 2 the discussion was on focused on human body being a musical instrument. It behaves like flute, drum and guitar. In face it also behaves like a keyboard. When ever he is pressed by emotions he makes sound. Now we will try to understand what impact music has on social aspect of humanity. Since it will help us to know rationally what ‘Keertan’ can do to uplift a human.
So, what is music:
“Music is an act form and cultural activity whose medium is sound organized in time.” *
Music is Cultural Activity: It is common practice in all cultures to attune to music during moments of celebration or to boost moral during tough time. Every one believes listening to music soothes the mind and help to overcome the stress. And if the music is practices in group it brings people together. Also, if walking in dark allies of one hears music the fear is expelled from mind. It gives certainty that somewhere near he could find security. So, if people will come together and sing songs or play music will the fear be gone?
Yes for a moment since they will observe unity, nearness and togetherness with each other. But it will not help to expel the fear of ‘Death’. It may help to bring glimpse of happiness but when such gatherings end they are bound to leave people in distress again. And they will come again together but they will keep going through same emotions, up and down.
This is exactly we observe in modern day parties. People engaged in music, drowned in addiction, trapped in evil thoughts, seem ecstatic but eventually ends up battered by their own actions. This is ‘Duality’. And ‘Gurbaani’ defines it in following words:
ਰਾਗਿ ਨਾਦਿ ਮਨੁ ਦੂਜੈ ਭਾਇ ॥**
(In music and song, the mind is caught by the love of duality.)
The ‘Duality’ is reason for endless miseries. Also, what kind of kind of culture is where people come together enjoy and prepare for their own doom. That’s why ‘Baba Nanak’ encouraged everyone to come together, from ‘Sadh Sangat – Holy Congregation’, sing ‘Keertan – Glorious Praised of Lord’. What it does? Every one is focused and one all energies combine, when harmonies combine, when thoughts combine every one gets emancipated. Since harmonies become true, thoughts become pure, energies become positive. What is outcome? Fear of ‘Death’ is expelled to the limit that a mortal is bound to become one with ‘One Formless Eternal True Lord’. And such is culture of ‘Sikhism’… TO BE CONTINUED
